چکیده

For centuries, owners of private, commercial and military sea vessels have attempted, with varying degrees of success, to surface treat their underwater hulls with coatings to prevent the adhesion and/or growth of large fouling organisms that cause severe drag, reducing vessel speed and maneuverability, and increasing fuel consumption. Two major approaches are currently under development: (1) “easy release” coatings, usually employing silicones or fluoropolymers designed to prevent strong adhesion of foulants, and (2) “ablative/selfpolishing” coatings, which typically contain a rapidly ecodegradable biocide which is toxic to foulants upon release, and is slowly but continuously released from the coating during its ablative process. Critical performance issues currently limit use of the easy release coatings to a relatively small number of vessels. For large commercial and military vessels, the more mature ablative antifouling coatings with biocides are necessary to maintain adequate operability.

Antifouling Activity of Natural Active Compounds through Bioassays and Field Immersion Tests

A growing concern for environmental issues is observed in the development of marine paints and coatings. This study is part of ECOPAINT PACA project and is focused on the comparison of the activity of several natural compounds to those of commercial biocides on the adhesion of marine bacteria and macroorganisms. In vitro and in situ tests were carried out on the selected compounds and on coatin...

Modern approaches to marine antifouling coatings

Marine structures such as platforms, jetties and ship hulls are subject to diverse and severe biofouling. Methods for inhibiting both organic and inorganic growth on wetted substrates are varied but most antifouling systems take the form of protective coatings. Biofouling can negatively affect the hydrodynamics of a hull by increasing the required propulsive power and the fuel consumption. This...

Life cycle assessment of the use of marine biocides in antifouling paint A comparison of the environmental profiles between conventional copper-based and innovative Selektope paint

Cuprous oxide-based antifouling paint is now the most common type in use, especially in the shipping industry. Anti-fouling paints prevent or slow down the growth of organisms attached to the hull, in order to improve a vessel’s performance and durability. However, copper is a scarce resource and never can be retrieved or recycled after leaching into the sea. The need to protect sensitive marin...

Risks of Using Antifouling Biocides in Aquaculture

Biocides are chemical substances that can deter or kill the microorganisms responsible for biofouling. The rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry is having a significant impact on the marine ecosystems. As the industry expands, it requires the use of more drugs, disinfectants and antifoulant compounds (biocides) to eliminate the microorganisms in the aquaculture facilities. The use of bioc...
